Cillian Murphy has been spotted looking unrecognisable after losing weight for his next film role. The Peaky Blinders star is currently in Los Angeles as he shoots scenes for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Oppenheimer.
The movie will see Cillian, 45, take the lead as the late theoretical physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, also known as the father of the atomic bomb. In order to replicate Oppenheimer’s distinctive lanky figure, the Tommy Shelby actor has “lost at least a stone”, according to reports.
In pictures obtained by the Daily Mail, he can be seen cutting a slim figure as he films scenes with co-stars Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh. He was also recently spotted filming outside the Fuller Lodge in the Los Alamos research facility – where the atomic bomb was first built – alongside Matt Damon.
This isn’t the first time Cillian has altered his appearance for a role. He previously revealed that he bulked up to play his Peaky Blinders character, admitting to RadioTimes Magazine: “I’m not a very physically imposing person. So I have to eat a lot of protein and lift a lot of weights and do all that stuff. So that takes a while, which I hate.”
Oppenheimer also stars Robert Downey Jr., Dane DeHaan and Rami Malek. Oscar winner Gary Oldman also plays a small role as President Truman in the biographical film, which is currently set to be released on July 21, 2023.
Cillian is best-known for playing the lead role in BBC’s hit period gangster drama, Peaky Blinders, which recently finished its sixth and final season. He has also starred in the likes of A Quiet Place II, Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy.
